How to get a blood test

If your GP sends you for a blood test, there are several options available.

For children under 12 months old

Book directly with the paediatric team on the Medical Day Unit, Acorn ward, Whipps Cross Hospital by calling 07546 655 797.

For children under 10 years old

These blood tests are done at Whipps Cross Hospital on Tuesdays and Thursdays only in Children’s Outpatients, Junction 3. You can book online here:  Online Appointment Healthcare Platform | Swiftqueue

For patients aged 10 and over

Waltham Forest Blood Test Service

North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT) runs the Waltham Forest Blood Test Service to provide routine and urgent community and domiciliary phlebotomy (blood testing) services to people living in the borough at three locations, one in Chingford, one in Leytonstone and one in Walthamstow. 

The walk in service is currently restricted in all clinics. Appointments are booked via the Swiftqueue system (see links below). If you unable to use the online booking system then you can call NELFT’s Single Point of Access team on 0300 300 1710 who will be able to book an appointment for you.

Home visits for blood testing

The domiciliary phlebotomy service is provided to those who are confined to their homes due to illness, in care homes (with no nursing facilities) and or disability or learning disability with challenging behaviour and/non-urgent patient transport service to attend hospital appointments.

Contact your GP, or another healthcare professional, to make a referral. The service should respond to within 2 days. For an urgent referral, the phlebotomist should visit the patient within 4 days and 2-3 weeks for a routine referral.

For patients aged 16 and above

E4 Network Primary Care Network (PCN)

If you are a patient, aged 16 and over, registered with one of the E4 Network PCN practices - Chingford Medical Practice, Churchill Healthcare, Handsworth Medical Practice, the Old Church Surgery and the Ridgeway Practice, you can book a blood test at your practice. Out of hours blood tests are done at Chingford Medical Centre. A home visiting service operates twice a week.

WF GP FedNet

The borough out-of-hours GP service now offers blood testing on weekday evenings and Saturday morning. Book at your GP reception or call 020 8519 3999.  There is a home visiting (domiciliary) service available for housebound patients but this is only bookable through your GP practice.

Whipps Cross Hospital

The blood testing service is located at Area 1 outpatients, Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 4.30pm.  You can book an appointment online  - Online Appointment Healthcare Platform | Swiftqueue They may accept walk-ins but you may have to wait. 

If your blood test is for another Barts Health hospital (St Bartholomew’s, Royal London, Newham or Mile End) then you can go to Whipps Cross if you prefer.  If your blood test is for a non-Barts Health hospital then you should go to that hospital and not Whipps Cross.
