Government seeks views on changing GP incentive schemes to improve patient care

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) is seeking public views on how incentive payments to GP practices could be changed to improve patient care.

GPs are currently incentivised though the quality and outcomes framework – which this year has 76 indicators – and an investment and investment and impact fund, which offers payments to primary care networks (groups of GP practices) on five areas.

DHSC says incentive schemes now need to evolve to ensure they “serve the best interests” of patients.

Questions in the consultation ask whether:

  • Improved patient access to care should be included in incentive schemes
  • Integrated care boards should set some GP targets, tailored to local need
  • Incentives should be mainly based on improving clinical outcomes or also include more general improvements to patient experience or staff well being
  • Practices should be rewarded for helping to reduce pressure on other parts of the health system
  • Continuity of care, such as a named GP, should be encouraged via incentives.

You can respond through an online consultation survey which will close on at 11.59pm on Thursday 7 March, 2024.
