Romanian trust and vaccine project
We found that while Romanians appreciate the NHS for its good quality of treatment, supportive staff, well-equipped hospitals and absence of corruption/informal payment practices, they may struggle to access processes due to user-unfriendly booking systems and unfamiliar bureaucratic practices, they worry that the diagnosis process may be too superficial and they don’t feel involved in decisions about their own care.
Vaccination is a controversial topic among Romanians in the UK; childhood immunisations are trusted more than vaccines for adults- especially the Covid-19 vaccine.
Social class and education are important determinants of attitudes towards vaccines. Romanians in professional and managerial occupations, as well as those who speak English fluently, are more likely to be vaccinated than those in traditionally working class occupations and those who speak limited English.
Romanian medical professionals living in the UK and working in the NHS could be important influencers in encouraging vaccination among the Romanian community; with social media, Romanian shops and schools acting as channels of communication.
