‘Sponge on a string’ cancer test now available at Whipps Cross
Whipps Cross Hospital is introducing an innovative cancer test, the Cytosponge, offering a faster and less invasive alternative to traditional methods like endoscopy.
This unique tool, dubbed the ‘Sponge on a String’, comprises an expanding pill that transforms into a sponge when swallowed, collecting cells as it is retrieved. Unlike other diagnostic tests, the entire procedure takes less than 30 minutes and does not require sedation, minimizing disruption to patients’ daily routines.
Patients report little to no discomfort, with one stating, “I didn’t feel any pain, I feel like I could eat a full English breakfast now!”
